This is the session we recommend to nearly every first-time guest, telescope owner or not. No equipment beyond a pair of binoculars is required — the entire point is learning to actually find things in the sky without help, starting with Orion because it’s bright, unmistakable, and visible from nearly any northern-hemisphere location for half the year.
By the end of the session, most guests can find Orion’s belt, trace the sword down to the nebula glowing at its tip, and use the belt as a signpost to nearby bright stars like Sirius and Aldebaran.
It sounds modest compared to a night at the eyepiece, but it’s consistently the session guests say changed how they look at the sky afterward, at home, with no equipment at all.
